How Twistly measures a good road

Every road is ranked on curvy metres — how many metres of genuine curve it gives you, not how curvy it is on average, which is the distinction that keeps housing estates (the curviest thing on any map, and the worst drive on it) out of your route. Each road also carries its speed limit, surface, width, how built-up its surroundings are, how close it runs to water, coast, forest and open moor, where its speed cameras sit, and how much traffic it typically carries, from the Department for Transport’s roadside counts. Finished routes are measured again, including every connecting road the router chose.
